February is Black History Month

Rooted in Legacy. Building the Future.

Black history is more than a moment—it’s a living legacy. At The Coach Ty Foundation, we honor the resilience, brilliance, and leadership of Black communities by investing in youth, families, and opportunities that create lasting impact. This month and always, we remain committed to building pathways where Black excellence can thrive.

Bill Willis was one of the first Black athletes to integrate professional football, helping break the color barrier in the NFL in 1946. A standout player at Ohio State University, Willis proved that talent, discipline, and leadership belong on every field—no matter the obstacles. His courage opened doors for generations of athletes to follow, reminding us that progress often begins with those willing to stand strong and lead the way.

Alice Coachman was the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal. At the 1948 London Olympics, she claimed gold in the high jump, making history despite growing up training barefoot in the segregated South. Her determination and excellence shattered barriers in sports and opened doors for generations of Black women athletes. Alice Coachman’s legacy reminds us that resilience, talent, and belief can take you higher than any obstacle.

Our journey

The Coach Ty Youth Foundation was born out of a deep passion for empowering youth and creating opportunities for underserved families. Founded by Tiree Williams, Sr., the foundation’s roots trace back to his time as Commissioner of the Garner Sports League. Affectionately know as Coach Ty, his dedication to coaching and mentoring young athletes goes beyond the game, as he organized events like coaches’ training and community activities to inspire children to participate and grow through sports.

Coach Ty’s journey also revealed the financial barriers that many families face, with parents in need reaching out for help to cover the costs of their children’s participation in sports. Witnessing this need firsthand, he was driven to take action, building a foundation that would make sports, mentorship, and academic resources accessible to all.

In his volunteer work at Union High School in Clinton, NC, Coach Ty saw a broader need for support in underserved communities. His experiences there reinforced his commitment to creating a program that would not only support children in their athletic pursuits but also address their academic and personal development needs.

Through these experiences, The Coach Ty Youth Foundation was established to break down barriers, foster confidence, and inspire the next generation to achieve their full potential both on and off the field.
